The Ocean Cleanup has completed its 100th extraction of plastic trash from the Pacific Ocean – and for the first time ever, the entire operation was streamed worldwide, live and in full.
Supporters, donors and partners from around the world joined us online for Extraction #100 Live – the first ever livestreamed cleaning operation from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (or GPGP). You can watch a highlights video below:
As System 03 was extracting plastic from the GPGP, our crew in the Netherlands coordinated the livestream while thousands of people from around the world tuned in to see the whole operation from start to finish.
Crew members from The Ocean Cleanup joined the program, including Founder and CEO Boyan Slat. Boyan gave insight into the operations in real-time and answered questions from the live audience on issues including our technology, our plans for our plastic catch, and the measures we take to protect the marine environment.
The three-hour broadcast featured deep-dive discussions on how our ocean system works, how partners and funders like Kia and Maersk are essential in helping us conduct our operations and manage our plastic catch, and details on our new fundraising platform – allowing everyone to support the largest cleanup in history.

Beginning with System 002’s first catch in 2021 and through the transition to System 03 in 2023, The Ocean Cleanup has now completed 100 extractions from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch – the largest accumulation of floating plastic on Earth.
While this unique achievement is an impressive milestone, there is still a long way to go to clean up the GPGP fully. We are now working on scaling and testing the technologies needed to clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch effectively.
