End-to-end logistical support to help transport and deployment of cleaning solutions around the world.
The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop and scale technologies to rid the oceans of plastic. This is an ambitious goal, and we cannot accomplish it alone – which is why we collaborate with organizations such as Hyundai Glovis which are keen to support us in our mission, and can help us achieve our goals faster and more efficiently.
The new partnership between The Ocean Cleanup and global SCM specialist Hyundai Glovis was officially signed on 5 July 2023 in Seoul, South Korea by Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, and Lee Kyoo Bok, CEO of Hyundai Glovis. This three-year collaboration will focus on three main areas: data gathering, end-to-end logistical support, and funding. Data gathering will be achieved by attaching cameras to Hyundai Glovis vessels operating in oceans around the world – allowing The Ocean Cleanup access to information on plastic pollution in new and poorly-researched areas with no disruption to vessel operations.
In order to solve the ocean plastic pollution problem, it is necessary to understand it – and The Ocean Cleanup conducts constant research to deepen our knowledge. However, researching plastic pollution across vast areas of ocean (often in inhospitable and difficult-to-reach locations on the high seas) is a daunting, expensive and complicated task. Placing our research cameras on Hyundai Glovis vessels operating across the oceans will give us greater insights into plastic pollution in areas which have never been studied in this way before, allowing us to optimize our research models and strategy and incorporate this information into our plans, always aiming for maximum efficiency.
Alongside this, Hyundai Glovis is providing end-to-end logistical support to aid The Ocean Cleanup in smoothly and safely transporting and managing our cleaning solutions and other equipment. The logistical challenges of moving advanced cleaning technology around the world are significant; our deployment locations are often difficult to access, and safely transporting such specialist equipment to these locations requires specialist knowledge – which Hyundai Glovis will now be providing. Additionally, Hyundai Glovis have agreed to provide funding to The Ocean Cleanup’s operations in both oceans and rivers.
Ridding the oceans of plastic is a planetary challenge, requiring all of us to do our part. Through this new partnership, The Ocean Cleanup and Hyundai Glovis will be united in facing this challenge.
