According to our research, roughly 1000 rivers account for 80% of the riverine plastic going into the ocean. In order to rid the oceans of plastic, we need to both clean up what is already out there, trapped in circulating gyres, and the plastic en route via rivers. The Ocean Cleanup is developing and scaling technologies called Interceptors, to halt river plastic. We currently have 10 Interceptor solutions deployed in Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, USA, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica – with many more in the pipeline. See more in our river playlist on YouTube.
