The Ocean Cleanup is building a database of volunteers who want to get involved with our mission on the ground and support the efforts of our local partners.

Following popular demand, we are launching a volunteer database through which our local partners may reach out when they need on-ground support for events like coastal sweeps, mangrove cleanups, awareness-raising campaigns, citizen science or other activities. Be on the frontline for the world’s largest cleanup.

FAQs

My location is not on the form, but I still want to sign up to volunteer. What do I do?: Thank you for your willingness to help – it truly makes a difference. Because these activities are hands-on and in person, we kindly ask you to only sign up for locations where you can realistically attend volunteer events. If there are no suitable locations listed, you are warmly invited to support our work in other ways, such as through our Citizen Science program, fundraising, or spreading the word about our mission.
Will more locations be added to the volunteer form? Can I sign up for more than one location?: We are actively scaling our river operations to new regions as part of our 30 Cities Program, which means additional locations will be added over time. If you want to sign up for more than one location, you will have to resubmit the form for each additional location. We strongly encourage you to only sign up for the location(s) where you can realistically attend volunteer events.
How has my personal data been used?/I want my personal data removed from the database.: The information you provide will be used to connect you with volunteering opportunities in the location you select and to share relevant updates related to those activities. You can request changes or deletion of your data at any time by contacting our support team via our online contact form and indicating that you would like your information deleted from the database.
When will I know when a volunteering event will take place? How often can I expect volunteering opportunities?: After you sign up for a specific location, your contact details will be shared with our local partner in that area. When they organize a volunteering activity, they will reach out directly to you by email with all the practical information, such as date, time, and location. The frequency of events depends on the local context, partner capacity, and seasonal conditions in each location. Some areas may have regular activities, while others may only host occasional campaigns.
Is there a minimum age to volunteer?: Age requirements may vary by activity and local partner, and some events may require volunteers to be 18 or older or to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Details about age and consent requirements will be shared by the local partner in the event information.
Are travel costs, equipment, or insurance covered?: In most cases, volunteers are responsible for their own transportation and personal expenses related to attending events. Safety instructions, required equipment, and any coverage provided will be communicated by the local partner before the activity.
