Setting new standards in how to turn waste into worth – join our mission

All of us at The Ocean Cleanup work hard every day to achieve our mission of ridding the world’s oceans of plastic pollution. Through our extraction operations in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and our interception operations in some of the world’s most polluting rivers, we remove millions of tons of plastic pollution.

Over the years of our operations, we have shared the challenges and complexities of what happens to this trash. From the chain of custody work, to our recycling efforts and now to the products that can give this waste new worth.

Five years ago, we started our own experiments, the first of which resulted in the production of limited-edition sunglasses made from ocean plastic. Since then, we have been working to look at how the plastic pollution we have collected and processed can go on to become new products that add value to the world we live in and, importantly, in forms that won’t return to the ocean as trash.

Our focus and mission are on ridding the oceans of plastic. We know that there are companies and businesses that are better able to imagine and develop what happens next with the plastic we extract and intercept. We are always looking for new visionary partners who can imagine the value of turning ocean trash into things people will treasure.

Just this month, our partners at Coldplay showed the world that plastic intercepted by The Ocean Cleanup in the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala, can be repurposed into the material for a limited-edition version of their latest album, Moon Music.

And, just last week, our global mission partner Kia announced the launch of their first product to be made of plastic extracted from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch: a limited-edition EV3 trunk liner.

What all these journeys are teaching us is that through the power of partnership and with the right imagination, plastic pollution can be reborn into items that bring joy, add value and deliver real purpose to products.

We hope that our reclaimed plastic is a finite product and that our vision of oceans clear of plastic is something that can be achieved quickly. Now, our focus is to find those partners who see the value in creating products that not only showcase a commitment to our mission but also bring value and joy to their customers through the products we create.
