- Partnership centered on deployment of The Ocean Cleanup’s Automated Debris Imaging System (ADIS) on Hyundai Glovis ships
- Since 2023, ADIS cameras mounted on 9 Hyundai Glovis ships have contributed to mapping over 22,000km2 of the Pacific Ocean; help identify plastic hotspots for cleanup efforts
- Successful partnership renewed for a further 4 years; includes additional funding, options for logistical support, and new ADIS deployments on Hyundai Glovis ships
Hyundai Glovis and The Ocean Cleanup have announced the successful renewal of their partnership. The Korea-based global Supply Chain Management company and core affiliate of the Hyundai Motor Group has been contributing to The Ocean Cleanup’s mission since 2023 by supporting data-gathering efforts and providing funding towards the world’s largest cleanup effort.
Central to this partnership has been The Ocean Cleanup’s Automated Debris Imaging System (ADIS) ship-mounted cameras which passively record, identify, and log the location of plastic debris in the ocean. Hyundai Glovis’ fleet currently hosts the biggest portion of ADIS cameras worldwide – 18 cameras installed on 9 ships – which have helped The Ocean Cleanup map over 22,000 km2 of the Pacific Ocean. This initiative reflects Hyundai Glovis’ commitment to leveraging its global fleet as a platform for scalable environmental data collection and supporting industry-wide efforts to address marine pollution.
The data collected by ADIS contributes directly to mapping plastic hotspots in the ocean and the development of The Ocean Cleanup’s smart steering strategy, which combines the data with drone imagery and AI modelling to inform the movement of the non-profit’s innovative cleanup technology to more effectively target accumulations of floating plastic.
As part of the renewed partnership agreement, The Ocean Cleanup will receive additional funding from Hyundai Glovis to support their cleanup operations in the ocean and in rivers. The renewal will also see additional ADIS cameras installed across Hyundai Glovis’ global fleet, and both parties will explore what opportunities are available for The Ocean Cleanup to further leverage Hyundai Glovis’ expert logistics and transport network to support their mission. Through this collaboration, Hyundai Glovis aims to further expand the role of logistics in enabling sustainable ocean solutions beyond transportation.
Speaking on the renewal of the partnership, Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO, The Ocean Cleanup said: “We are very thankful for Hyundai Glovis continued trust and support. They have been critical in helping us map the ocean’s plastic hotspots and as such are playing a major role in furthering the global understanding of the movement and distribution of plastic pollution in the ocean.”
Robin de Vries, ADIS Lead, The Ocean Cleanup added: “Glovis have been a very valuable partner for the organization. At the moment, half of all of our ADIS cameras deployed worldwide are on Glovis ships, and they are providing an increasingly dense scan of the oceans. The data they are collecting is helping ADIS to achieve its goals in supporting The Ocean Cleanup mission and creating the world’s most comprehensive database on floating plastic debris observations.”
Kyoo-Bok Lee, President and CEO, Hyundai Glovis: “We are pleased to renew our partnership with The Ocean Cleanup based on the meaningful progress we have achieved together over the past three years in addressing marine plastic pollution. We sincerely appreciate The Ocean Cleanup’s continued dedication and collaboration, and we will continue to leverage our global maritime network and capabilities to contribute to environmental protection in a tangible way.”
