MISSION TO METRICS

The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop and scale technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. Once the plastic is removed from the ocean, we aim to process it in accordance with our waste management policy.

Based on extensive research and the analysis of the ocean plastic waste we have collected so far, we know that the waste is mainly composed of polyolefins in the form of ghost nets, ropes, and hard plastic. Recycling this waste is challenging because available technologies and infrastructure are not yet adequately developed to manage ocean plastic waste. But we believe it can be done. When recycling is not possible, we will seek alternative solutions for processing.

The Catch Management team is responsible for the waste once extracted from the ocean. The goal is to repurpose this ocean plastic into new products, thereby creating a means of funding the mission and allowing supporters to join our mission.

“The plastic pollution that we take out of the ocean is not easy to recycle, but it can be done. We are looking to expand the team with a recycling manager who knows the industry very well and can think out of the box for innovative solutions to managing the ocean plastic waste.”

Stella van den Berg, Catch Management Director.
