The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. As part of this mission, we design, develop, and deploy cleanup systems to stop plastic from reaching our oceans by intercepting it in rivers.

The Data & Monitoring Team measures the performance of our plastic interception technologies by researching the spatial and temporal behavior of plastic in rivers and providing all relevant data on rivers where deployments are planned. Tracking different types of trash requires comparison and testing of different tracing and tracking techniques for trash in riverine environments. We are looking for a well-organized and structured person who can help assess the best tracker and tracking techniques for a variety of research questions. This includes collection and summary of sensing techniques, preparation of testing protocols, execution of field tests and analysis of results.

  • Research and comparison of existing tracking techniques such as GPS and radio tracking
  • Writing testing plans for assessment and comparison of techniques
  • Preparation & execution of tests
  • Results analysis and reporting
  • Cooperation with Data & Monitoring Team and other scientists from the research team in plastic research-related topics

  • Bachelor's degree; preferably post-graduate science education in environmental sciences, engineering, biology, or a closely related field
  • Experience with GIS software is a plus (ArcGIS, QGIS e.g.)
  • Affinity with telemetry and sensors
  • Ability to present and explain results in an organized and structured way
  • Comfortable with travelling abroad for testing
  • Fluent in English

  • Enthusiastic, energetic, and curious
  • Hands-on mentality
  • Enjoys working in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to deal with uncertainty, changes in scope, and ambiguity
  • Great organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Intrinsic motivation to work on our ambitious and meaningful goal.
