The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop technology to rid the world’s oceans and rivers of plastic. You will support our mission by strengthening our relationships with governments, international organizations, and civil society organizations.

The Head of External Affairs will create relationships with government at all levels as well as international organizations and CSOs with a clear-sighted focus on delivering our mission. You will be managing our efforts ensuring maximum impact with minimum resources, in close cooperation with our global and local partners. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Policy development
  • Direct engagement with governments, IOs and CSOs in the context of understanding and delivering goals;
  • Ensure visibility in our countries of envisaged operation and at the international podium
  • Leveraging existing and creating new networks to reach the deal-making phase with government agencies across the globe
  • Visiting prospective partners in numerous countries and locations
  • Leading MOU negotiations in liaison with our General Counsel


  • Master’s degree in international relations or another relevant field
  • At least 12 years working experience; preferably in a similar role in an international company, consultancy, government, CSO or international organization 
  • A proven ability to deliver results through well targeted contacts with governments, international organizations, and civil society  
  • You have been exposed to numerous cultures and proven to thrive in such environments
  • Resource mobilization experience is a plus
  • Excellent English language skills (in writing & verbal), Dutch is not per se a necessity. Other languages such as Spanish or French are a plus
