The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. As part of this mission, we design, develop, and deploy cleanup systems to stop plastic from reaching our oceans by intercepting it in rivers. As a Data Analytics Engineer, you will analyze data from river projects around the world. The focus will be on analyzing and visualizing the performance of our Interception systems by integrating research with operational data.

“We are looking for a colleague with a hands-on mentality who is eager to make an impact by enabling data-driven decisions. You will develop and implement analysis methodologies for performance assessments and plastic transport. You enjoy combining data from different sources (including sensors and IoT) and working on the junction of data science, data analysis, and data engineering. Translating raw data to visualizations that will push data-driven decisions is a core task. Doing this, you will help make more impactful interceptions.”  – The Data & Monitoring Team

As a Data Analytics Engineer within the River Team, you will be:

  • Analyzing and reporting on data collected in rivers through a variety of field sensors and remote sensing methods
  • Supporting the acquisition, quality control, and analysis of various hydrological and remote sensing datasets
  • Accountable for visualization of the performance of Interceptor deployments
  • Responsible for standardizing performance calculations: combining operational data from several sources with hydrological and sensor data to assess the performance of Interceptor deployments
  • Responsible for the requirements for data collection needed for performance analysis

  • Master's degree in computer science, data science, physics, hydrology, or another geoscience-related field
  • 0-5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience with Python (minimal intermediate skill level) and software version control
  • Comfortable with taking responsibility and ownership of data pipelines
  • Experienced with GIS software is a plus (ArcGIS, e.g.)
  • Affinity with IoT and hydrological sensors is a plus
  • Experience in Agile working is a plus
  • Fluent in English

  • Affinity with conveying technical data to non-technical colleagues
  • Eye for detail, especially related to graphics and visualizations
  • Able to deal with uncertainty, changes in scope, and ambiguity
  • Able to perform well in a fast-paced and highly challenging environment
  • Curious, creative, and a hands-on mentality - you are ready and keen to execute initiatives yourself
  • Willingness to travel abroad
