In order to achieve our mission to rid the world's oceans of plastic, we need to fully understand the system’s behavior and also the behavior of the plastic. The computational modeler will have succeeded when we understand how plastics behave and why, and how our cleanup system(s) behave and why. He or she will get to that level of understanding by performing advanced data analyses and by dynamic modeling at different levels.

We are now looking for a Computational Modeler to join a small team of computational modelers who report to either the Project Engineer or the Lead Computational Modeler.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform CFD simulations of The Ocean Cleanup systems and sub-systems
  • Run oceanographic sea-surface current and waves models
  • Design and perform basic scale experiment to validate/calibrate the models
  • Participate in onshore/offshore field experiments
  • Together with offshore engineers, develop ocean cleanup system concepts, determine feasibility and perform concept selection


  • University degree in mechanical -, or marine engineering or equivalent, with fluid mechanics, oceanography
  • Proficiency with commercial CFD codes (ANSYS / Star CCM+ / XFlow) or research CFD code (ReFRESCO / REEF3D) is preferred
  • Experience using Matlab/Python is required
  • Knowledgable with SQL and database management tools is a plus
  • Basic knowledge in machine learning models and algorithms is a plus
  • Experienced in model testing
  • Background in conceptual design
  • Balancing computational modeling, conceptual thinking, and teamwork
  • Excellent English language skills
