The mission of The Ocean Cleanup is to develop advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. We design, develop, and deploy cleanup systems to stop plastic from reaching our oceans by intercepting it in rivers. As Business Development Manager, you will enable a fast global scale-up of innovative solutions for plastic extraction in rivers. To do so, we need to build strong partnership networks around the world. We are looking for an energetic, knowledgeable, and result-driven self-starter with experience in corporate and non-profit sectors and a broad and relevant global network.

You will lead business development efforts in several solution projects. You will be identifying and committing the right stakeholders and funding opportunities. You will initiate and design non-standardized projects for extracting plastic from rivers. You will participate in the strategy development for fast and sustainable scale-up of river cleanup technology solutions. You are at your best once we are successfully deploying our technology with the help of our global and local partners. As good colleagues, you will spar with the other business developers to push for momentum where needed and for redundancy where possible. 

Responsibilities include: 

  • Write a well-structured problem definition for river cleanups, including multiple perspectives and based on solid data 
  • Identify, form, and manage relationships in target countries 
  • Scout and secure local funding opportunities, in collaboration with the funding team  
  • Lead local contract negotiations to set up local and regional consortia with support from the legal team 
  • Design, develop and evaluate localized business and operating models 


  • You have at least 4 years of working experience, preferably in an international, consulting role working with strategy formulation, partnerships, and consortia 
  • You possess academic level thinking and communication skills 
  • You have experience with setting up a business and operating models 
  • You have experience in commercial deal closing 
  • You have excellent English-language skills, with at least 1 other language 
  • You have been exposed to numerous cultures and proven to thrive in such environments
